Drapery no. 1

Drapery is basically kind of a material of cloth, curtain, a functional fabric that covers up the body or any surface. Besides it's functional usage, in western art history it is feasible to encounter with this material in any painting as a still-life component, an aesthetical object on a nude depiction, an element in a baroque sculpture to display the dynamism of the sculpture.

Does drapery depicts any symbolic meaning, or is it just placed in any artwork for no reason? Is it there to enrich the visual content or did any of the artist's consider it as an important element? From my vision drapery was always interesting in the sense that it is considered as a concrete object yet it is an intangible layer which can take the shape of any form and transform into the object's identity; this aspect of the drapery makes me assume the fluidity of itself just as the water can take the shape of any container. Thus the container is becoming the contained one.

Besides this regard, I want to focus on how the pattern, design, texture, drawing, used materials in the drapery is pointing out to the cultural and sociological contexts. As a material its patterns are changing from geography to culture, from poor to rich citizen. How these features are reflected in any of the art scenes, not only in occidental art tradition yet in oriental depictions too.  What is the meaning of the drapery in a painting of Medici family, patronage of Florence and in a Brughel's depiction of common people?

  1. It might be interesting for you to look at Deleuze and Guattari's writings on the "body without organs". This is a chapter from their famous book "A Thousand Plateaus" although they also talked about it in the prequel to that "Capitalism and Schizophrenia". But, I think the main important text is the one in a thousand plateaus. Here's the pdf: https://libcom.org/files/A%20Thousand%20Plateaus.pdf
    It is chapter 6.
And here is some google stuff about their concept that you may want to look at to get an overview before you decide if you want to delve into this further:
